Problem Solving Strategies: Make an Organized List

Icon of stacked coins
The three-digit number 115 has a "digit sum" of 7, since the sum of its digits 1+1+5 equals 7. How many positive whole numbers have a digit sum of 7?

When we encounter a problem that may have multiple solutions, it is important for us to be systematic as we explore all of the options and configurations. What is the best way to organize a list of possible solutions? How will we know when we have found them all? How can we ensure that we don't overlook a solution, or accidentally count the same solution twice?

This is the second of four math workshops in the Problem Solving Strategies Series. Each workshop in the series introduces a helpful strategy for tackling unfamiliar problems, and offers participants the opportunity to explore mathematical puzzles that have been curated to highlight the theme strategy. Participants can experiment with using the theme strategy, discuss different approaches, and gain confidence with technique.

About Mathematics Workshops

Mathematics workshops focus on the joy of exploration and discovery. No specific mathematical experience is required.

Workshop content will generally target middle- and high-school mathematics concepts, though the puzzles and problems we explore can scale up or down to meet a variety of challenge levels.

You are welcome to use the contact form on this page to reach out with questions about whether a certain math workshop is right for your student.
